Let me tell you a little bit about who I am.
Ever since I was a kid I loved exploring. Usually that was outside, but you could also find me scouring the pages of a book about lizards or acting out a self-written play for my family. I’m thankful for the people who encouraged my wonder as a child, and that’s a big reason why I love doing the same for others now.
After growing up in Wisconsin and Michigan I started my college career in Tennessee, then transferred and graduated from Burman University in Alberta, Canada with a degree in Adveture-based Youth Leadership. During my summers I worked at Camp Wakonda in Wisconsin, Sunset Lake Camp in Washington, and Mt. Aetna Summer Camp in Maryland, leading their nature and science programs. There’s never a dull day at summer camp, and that’s exactly how I like it!
After a teaching outdoor education in California for a bit, I moved to Maryland where I knew I wanted to keep sharing the joys of science and nature with kids. That’s why I joined the team at Kids After Hours as their Science Director where I get to do STEM programs for around 1,000 students each month!
Over the past 15 years I’ve learned a lot about science communication, and I would say the most important thing is to foster that sense of wonder we’ve had since our childhood. No matter how young or old you are, we could all use a little more wonder in our lives!
When I’m not presenting about science you can probably find me out birdwatching or playing boardgames like Wingspan with my wife Melody. We live in Ellicott City, MD with our pets, Chico the turtle and Pancake the monitor lizard.
